Hi! I’m Sarah, a Virginia gal who is enjoying the opportunity to live surrounded by beautiful Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. When my husband and I purchased our home in late 2016, I knew I wanted to name the property, and with all the Creeping Thyme growing around our patio and over stone walls, it was easy to decide on “Mountain Thyme.” It is a privilege to live in this breathtaking part of Virginia, keeping hives of Honey Bees right in my own backyard. With inspiration from my daughter, and after taking a beginner beekeeping course in early 2018, I acquired my first bees in April of 2018. I’ll never forget my first experience of suiting up, and standing in an apiary with thousands of bees humming all around me….very surreal!
The COVID pandemic inspired my product development in 2020 and 2021. It didn’t take long for me to learn that because honey is seasonal, it sells out quickly, so I was determined to create other products derived from nature. With all the harsh chemicals in everyday products, and from so much hand washing drying out my hands, I decided to work on recipes for a moisturizer, using local beeswax. I finally came up with my Bee Butter recipe and have enjoyed hearing from people all over the country who are using it.
In 2021, I started researching propolis (an intriguing substance made by Honey Bees) and learned that the wellness attributes of propolis are just too good to ignore. So I have developed propolis tincture, propolis oil, and propolis throat spray, in an effort to provide people with some all-natural, healthy products to aid in boosting their immune systems. It’s astounding how much the bees can do for us!
My beekeeping journey has had a profound impact on me. The more I learn and experience, the more fascinated I become. I’m really just a beginner and continually count on my fellow “beeks” for advice and guidance. My two daughters have been instrumental in helping me with building my business, and it’s their excitement and encouragement along with my husband’s support that keeps me inspired. What’s really exciting for me is sharing my fascination and enthusiasm with others in my community. The more we know, the more we will care, and that’s always a good thing.
